I've been doing things...

We (me, Little Man, and Husband) are on the outskirts of Washington DC and have been here since Thursday. We left on Tuesday afternoon, got through Chicago before the rush hour traffic started, went through one hell of a thunderstorm in Indiana, stayed over in Cincinatti on Tuesday  night, drove through the southern Appalachian mountains on I-40 (beautiful, by the way...may be better than the Blue Ridge Parkway but, not having been on it, I don't know for sure), stayed in Greensboro, NC on Wednesday, and headed up to the in-laws on Thursday (my BIL and his wife, not the parents-in-law).

I'm working on socks. I'll post progress pictures when we get home. They're on my iPhone......and I don't have my laptop to download them. Oh well.

So....that's where I am. where are you?

Brown Bag Exchange (finally!)

I've been needing to show you for over a week and a half what I made for the Madison Knitters' Guild Brown Bag Exchange.

I finally got the pictures onto my computer. So...I can show you what I made. Unfortunately, I haven't photographed the blanket I received so you can't see that, yet.

But, on to the photos.

First up...

The Maile Sweater
Yarn: Zen Garden (the variegated pink/orange) and Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino (white)
Needles: #5 - 24" circular
Size: the pattern says it will fit a 3 month old...but I used larger needles and my gauge was bigger and I made it longer so mine would probably fit a 6 month old.

This is the sweater after it was washed and blocked. I didn't have enough pins so it looks a little funny in certain places (sleeves, specifically). I also did a stupid and forgot to add button holes so I only had two buttons. But, really, for a child's cardigan, you're not going to need a bunch of buttons unless it's for serious outer wear (like a sweatercoat).

Here's what it looked like before I blocked it (and before the buttons)...

Aside from the fact that I thought I was going to break my Addi Turbos when I was attaching the sleeves to the body, it was a fairly easy pattern to follow...except for the part where I was stupid and forgot to add button holes where I was supposed to. Oh well. It's still cute, right?

Anyway, I had yarn left over...so I made a matching hat based on the lace pattern at the bottom of the sweater and my own little head.

Again, I used the same yarn and needle size.

My gauge was the same.

So, how this hat would fit anything other than a newborn is beyond me...seriously, my gauge was the same. I have no idea why this hat didn't come out to be 16" instead of 14". I actually went to make another hat and CO more stitches (only 10 more - which should have equated to about 2")...and that hat would have fit me. So, I think gauge was just eluding me for this.

Anyway, this hat would fit a newborn. Eventually, there will be a pattern to go with it...I just haven't done it yet. I have to take a look at my notes first.

That's what they looked like together after blocking and such. I'm actually really proud of myself for this because it came out so cute :)

Speaking of cute......

This last picture is from Sunday, May 15th at the hospital......again. He was pretty happy considering. We brought him in on Saturday because he wasn't eating well, he was teething, he had his six month shots on Friday, he had a cold...and we found out when we were there that he had an ear infection. Poor kid. So that metabolic disorder reared it's head again. Luckily, it was only an overnight stay instead of a half-week. We were only there for a total of 23 hours.

Anyway, perhaps in my next post, I'll have something to show you...like progress on my giraffe or the blanket Little Man got from Brown Bag Exchange (he loves it - it's squisy).

Round and round we go....you spin me :)

I know, I know, I promised a post with knitting and pictures and such like that and it's just not going to happen today. I need to hook my iPhone up to the computer and upload the pictures I've taken but I need to find the cord.

I also need to take some more photographs of the item I received in the Brown Bag Exchange...I'm not telling you what it is yet :)

I had planned to do some of this over the weekend but, really, I have a good reason for not getting any of it done. No, really, it's really good...

Little Man landed himself in Children's Hospital again. He had his cardiologist appointment about a week and a half ago...he had an EKG and she listened to him. This past week, he had his ECG (which was fine) and a 24-hour heart monitor (which I assume was fine, too, though I haven't heard). He also had his 6-month appointment with his regular pediatrician...which means shots. Poor kid. All the shots he had were ones he has had before...just not all of them at the same time. He had a huge welt on one of his legs (the side that got two shots) from the shots. Other than that, he was fine...or so I thought. I knew he had a little baby cold but it didn't seem to be bothering him.

And then Friday night happened. We had to fight him for over an hour just to get him to take two ounces of his bottle...usually, he grabs the bottle out of my hand and chugs away, finishing 4.5 oz. at a time. Not so. Seriously, an hour of fighting...and only half of what he normally has.

He didn't drink well over night either, when I woke him up. He coughed so much that he threw up his 4 oz. from 2am...and then he didn't want to drink much more throughout the morning hours. We called his metabolic doctor in the morning and we decided that we should probably take him in to the ER. Thankfully, we learned from the mistakes and stupidity from last time...we were only in the ER for a total of 2 hours, instead of waiting over 2 hours to get the damn IV started.

We stayed over night, until we could see what he was going to do...we discovered when we got upstairs to his room that he had an ear infection. No wonder he was cranky and didn't want to eat. Poor kid. This is his first ear infection. We got to hear a new cry out of him, too.....the "pain" cry. It sounds so pitiful and it really got to Husband...kind of like the face he makes when he sticks his little lip out, frowns, and starts to cry. That's the one that gets to me.

Saturday night was a rough night. Little Man did not want to sleep in the crib. He insisted on sleeping on mommy...except he wouldn't sleep more than a half-hour at a time. He kept either kicking or bobbing his head and I'd wake up, then he'd wake up more, then he'd get fussy. It didn't help that I was sleeping in a recliner...and either my arms will fall asleep or my feet will fall asleep (I don't fit very well). It just was not a fun night.

Luckily, we came home yesterday afternoon...so it was just an overnight stint. He's on amoxicillin for the ear infection, an alteration of Tylenol and Motrin for the pain (in his ears and for his teeth), and eating whenever he wants (but no longer than 8 hours during the day and 4 hours at night). He's already feeling much better. I don't have to fight him to get him to eat, which is nice. He's also acting much more like himself :)

With that said, it's caused me to do some thinking. This is only the second time he's ever been sick...and both times landed him in Children's Hospital. I'm supposed to be student teaching in the fall...working in a germ factory, late nights, etc. If he's going to wind up in the hospital every time he gets sick, student teaching is not going to work. I cannot take time off during student teaching, even if it's for a family/medical emergency...well, I can but it means I'll have to work longer. There's a little give during first semester because they don't have a fall break but spring semester gets tricky because of spring break and Easter break. So, I think I've made the decision that I'm going to wait...now I just have to withdraw from classes and let the placement coordinator know.

Hrm.

But, in knitting news, I started the giraffe from Susan B. Anderson's Itty-Bitty Toys...except I'm making it green for Little Man. I'm almost done with the body and that's a good portion of the whole thing. I may make another one for Little Man's cousin, Sweet Girl. I won't have it done by the time we go to visit in a couple of weeks but I'm thinking Christmas/birthday (her birthday is about a week and a half before Christmas). Maybe. We'll have to see how the one for Little Man goes first...

Anyway, I promise that I'll post pictures from Brown Bag Exchange and other adventures soon...

Not Another Genealogy Post! Too bad for you :)

What's with the lack of knitting? Oh yeah, that's right...I have to wait until at least tomorrow before I can post some of my knitting things.

But, genealogy, on the other hand...major SCORE this weekend.

I knew I had this information somewhere but I hadn't seen it since before we moved into my grandparents' house (which, incidentally will be my house come January 2014). I was cleaning in my office yesterday and I came across a bunch of genealogy stuff.

In particular, I found something my step-grandma, Ann (Miller) (McElrath) Zerbel had given me after my grandpa, Roland Arthur Zerbel,  died in 2002. It was a family tree that my great-aunt, Dorothy Wilhelmina (Zerbel) (Steward) Heidner had compiled several years earlier (before she died).

If you don't want to read about genealogy, I suggest you stop reading **NOW** and skip down a bit until you start reading about something else....

It contained several generations of my father's family's information as well as some information that my grandma further provided on separate sheets of paper.

I have been trying to remember what my great-grandma Zerbel's name was...could not think of it. Luckily, it's contained on this sheet: Doretta Anna (Holzwarth) Zerbel. I knew my great-grandpa's name was Lewis (Louis) Richard Zerbel. His parents (my great-great grandparents) were Herman Carl Zerbel (I've seen Carl Herman on some websites - I'm working on which is correct) and Dorthea Wilhelmina Schultz. My great-grandma Doretta's parents were Christian Holzwarth Jr., and Augusta Wilhelmina Plath (my great-great grandparents). I also know all of my great-great-great grandparents' names: Johann Zerbel & Maria (Zastrow is the surname I've found in several places); Fredrick Schultz & Dorthea; Christian Holzwarth & Maria (Mary) Kurz; and Carl Frederic Wilhelm Plath & Henrietta Fredreicka Schulze.

Combine this finding with a family tree that my mother must have "helped" me fill out years ago...based on my handwriting, I'd say I was probably in second grade. Anyway, It has several generations on my paternal grandmother's side, and my mother's family.

So, in addition to the find for my Zerbel line, I also found information on the Green/Michelbook/Schrantz/Lorge (Lorgy) line (my maternal grandfather's family), the Johnston/Fagerlind/White/Bostrom line (my maternal grandmother's family), and the Wideen/Beckner/Carlson/Schilf line (my paternal grandmother's family).

Now I think I can delve in further...I just have to pony up the dough to pay for an Ancestry membership. And other things. It's all good information :)

I also found myself a copy of my paternal grandfather's obituary (still contained in a newspaper - I'll have to cut it out and laminate it), my paternal grandmother's obituary (fully laminated - the kind you get from the funeral home) and I know I have a copy of some information that I posted from information that I never kept track of......

It's all exciting. Eventually I'll post pictures.

Also, Mother's Day was yesterday...my first "real" Mother's Day (as I was pregnant at this time last year). Husband made breakfast and dinner. He helped me out with watching Little Man so I could get some cleaning done. He tried to help me by starting his laundry...but I had to finish it and put it away (I'm anal about it and he'd heap it all on the floor if I'd let him - so I just put it away for him so it doesn't get too wrinkled).

Other than that, it's been a little crazy around here. Little Man and I went to check out a daycare here in town this morning. I like it and I think we'll be going there...the only thing I don't like, and all daycares appear to do this, is that if we're gone or miss more than our allotted "vacation" time, we have to continue to pay, even though Little Man wouldn't be there. It's kind of commonplace and I can see why daycares do it...it's just annoying and a waste of money, to me. But, that's just how it is.

I went through my yarn today...it's the Madison Knitters' Guild's last meeting of the season which means we are our own vendors, so to speak. So, I went through my stash and I have a large knitting bag full of yarn to sell...and it's all decent stuff. I also finished my stuff for Brown Bag Exchange but I can't share until tomorrow because, well, the person may read my blog and know what they're getting.......which isn't all that likely but it's still possible. So, I'm going to hold off on posting those until tomorrow, at least.

This week is going to be just as crazy. Tomorrow is the only day that isn't crazy. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are all going to be taken up by Little Man's doctor appointments. With his metabolic disorder (remember this post?), he has to see some "extra" doctors that most children won't have. He had his first appointment with his cardiologist last week. His EKG looked fine and he sounded fine but there are just some things you don't know without actually looking...so, on Wednesday, he's going in for a(nother) ECG. He had one when he was a week old but he's going to need one every six months or so until he's two and then yearly for awhile...then every couple of years and so on and so forth. So, his ECG is on Wednesday. On Thursday (through Friday), he's going in for a 24-hour heart monitor. He's not going to be too happy about it. He has to have it strapped to him, under a onsie and I have to keep track of his meltdowns so the cardiologist doesn't misread the printout as him having a problem when he was just all worked up for some reason or another. And then on Friday he has his regular 6 month checkup.

It's going to be a long week.

I hope to find time to knit. Or spin. Or something...

Genealogy research...

Sometimes, I wish I had kept better records when I started my genealogy research a decade ago. Things that were so readily available and easy to find a decade ago are eluding me today...and it's driving me NUTS!

I've been trying to find out what ship my father's family came on when they came to the US.

Do you think I can find it?! No. I know they came from Bremen to New York and I thought it was in the late 1850s...I'll have to dig out my genealogy research to see if I kept any notes that were useful. Hrm.

I even tried looking at the other side of my family...to no avail either.

It's going to be one of those days.

No-Pictures Wednesday...

I've given up on making something else for the Brown Bag Exchange. I have the sweater and hat almost finished...just need to block both and add the buttons to the sweater. I had planned to make another hat and that just didn't go well. For the first hat, I CO 63 stitches...and it will just barely fit a newborn. So, I figured that if 63 stitches = 14.25", then surely 75 stitches would be about 16.5".....WRONG! 75 stitches would have fit me. No, seriously....I have no idea how that happened!

How did I figure this out? I accidentally pulled out an entire needle while waiting in line to pick up our information for Crazylegs. So, I pulled out the other two and stretched it out. It probably would have been too big, even for my 22.5" head. It stretched out quite nicely. But, way too much for a baby hat.

So, I frogged it and started over later...trying to do a top-down hat. That didn't go so well. I had slick aluminum needles and it just didn't work. I tried using my #4 Blackthorn Needles...they're not slick. I even tried by doing an i-cord first. Again, it didn't work...the stitches got too tight while I was increasing around the crown.

So....I frogged it again. And since I have to turn everything in on Monday, I don't want to bother starting something that I may or may not finish in time. I wound the remaining yarn back up on the niddy-noddy and called it a day.

I'm planning to write up the pattern for the baby hat and post it on this blog...or maybe make a PDF. I haven't decided which yet. I'll post it and have test knitters and all of that...it'll be great.

Other than that, there hasn't been a whole lot going on in my world. I'm thinking about getting Little Man's blanket ready for testers...but I need to do some swatching to figure out gauge (approximate) before I do that...which means I need to find some bulky yarn and some sport weight yarn (and I'm doing mine in a worsted weight). I thought about doing one in fingering weight yarn but I think that would just require way too many skeins for a baby blanket. So, I'll stick to sport, worsted, and bulky, for now...and maybe add fingering weight and, *gasp* laceweight later. Or not.

Perhaps I'll have photographs after this weekend...then I'll be able to share the Brown Bag Exchange photos (both of what I made and what I receive).

In the real world, Little Man went to his first (of many) cardiologist appointments on Monday. With the metabolic disorder he has, one of the problems that can arise are heart problems. Because he has such a mild form of the disorder, the chances that he'll have any heart problems is quite low...but we still have to check. His EKG was fine and he sounded fine. He's having an echo-cardiogram next week Wednesday, a 24-hour heart monitor put on next week Thursday, and then he has his appointment with his pediatrician next Friday. He also needs to meet with his genetic metabolic doctor in the next couple of weeks, too. I swear, the kid has more doctors than I do...and that's saying something. He has his regular pediatrician, his genetic metabolic doctor, the metabolic dietician, the other genetic metabolic doctor (we've seen both), and a cardiologist. I just hope he doesn't inherit my bad eyesight or wind up with allergies/asthma.

Anyway, that's pretty much all I got right now...photos next week, I think.
