Fourth Annual Knit & Crochet Blog Week - Monday

Day One (Monday April 22nd): The House Cup.
A bit like Harry Potter, but not quite, this year’s Knitting & Crochet Blog Week is split into 4 houses. Don your favorite knitted or crocheted hat and let it guide you to which house you will be in.

The House of Bee: Bees are busy and industrious, but can flit from one interesting project to the next as bright and shiny things capture their interest.

The House of Manatee: Manatees are gentle, calm and cuddly. Relaxed and unflashy they represent the comfort and soft side of knitting and crochet.
The House of Monkey: Intelligent and with a fun loving side, Monkeys like to be challenged with every project presenting them with something new and interesting.

The House of Peacock: Peacocks take something good and make it brilliant. Buttons, embellishments and a bit of sparkle prove that perfection lies in the details – like a Peacock's Tail.
So choose your house. You may be a combination of more than one of these noble beasts, but think about which house best embodies your qualities and declare your place. You can use one of the graphics above to display your house crest, if you like (though this is totally optional).

Post about your crafting outlook/style and why you chose this house. The descriptions have been purposefully written to seem quite vague, but that's really because they are only the merest starting point to prompt bloggers to write about in which ways they identify themselves within their craft(s).

Don't forget to drop by Eskimimi Makes later in the week and vote for which house you chose so we can see which houses crocheters and knitters most identified with.

You could of course decide that you are so unlike any of these creatures in your style of crafting that you set up a rival faction and adopt your own house, though whether you get invited to the end of term disco remains to be seen, you rebel.

What a way to start out the Fourth Annual Knitting & Crochet Blog Week. I have to sit back and actually think about my knitting...and not just the projects but also my style and what kind of knitter I might be.

I'll be quite honest. I'm not any one of these four houses....but there is one that fits me more than the rest so I'm going to go with that one. But first, let's talk about our "losers,"  and keep in mind that the other categories are not losers...they're just not me.

First up, THE HOUSE OF PEACOCK. According to the above description, the House of Peacock is all about taking something and making it awesome by either embellishments, changes in pattern, etc. Yeah....I'm not a good enough knitter for this. Buttons, beads, bling...it's just not something I do unless the pattern calls for it. And even then, I still may not do it. I suppose, perhaps, if I were to make Celestarium (for example), I would be forced to add the beads. Otherwise it's just a circular shawl, which is probably still lovely but rather boring and that's not the point of the shawl in the first place. With that said, as much as I admire the craftsmanship that goes into that shawl, it's not me. I wouldn't pick it, I wouldn't want to make it, and that is that. Bling and beads and embellishments just aren't me...and that's why I don't fit in this house. At all. Not even a teensy bit.

Second, THE HOUSE OF MANATEE. The above description talks of the calm, no-nonsense approach to knitting. I do find calmness in knitting, some days more than others. Most days, however, I'm a bit nuts and stressed out so it's rare that I'm relaxed and calm with my knitting. So, I fall into this category a teensy bit. But only a teensy bit....like the size of my pinky.

THE HOUSE OF MONKEY is third. Intelligent, fun-loving, and loves a challenge are traits of the House of Monkey. I may or may not fall into "intelligent" but I do love a challenge...just not all the time. Every project of mine isn't full of new and exciting things, especially when I repeat some projects over and over or want mindless projects. It happens more often than I'd like but I have discovered that I don't need to be afraid. What's the worst thing that happens if I mess up my knitting? It doesn't fit. I rip it out. I run out of yarn. Oh well. It's not like I'll die or anything.

My house of choice, the one that I most identify with, is the most noblest HOUSE OF BEES. Busy, industrious, and flit from one interesting thing to another. Anyone that is familiar with my Self-Imposed Year of Projects list can see that I......well, let's just say that my interests vary, are vast, and great. Also, I can't just work on one project at a time. I do get into phases where I concentrate on one project, especially when I'm close to finishing but, generally speaking, I'm a bit all over the place. Also, my Ravelry Queue is a bit flighty, too. I suppose I am, in a way, a bit whimsical with my knitting...in that I have stash acquired (way) beyond my life expectancy (SABLE), a queue that's far too long (and I've pared it down over the years), an ever-growing knitting library, and all the designs running through my head......and yet I'm still knitting on all the other things. ::sigh::

I'm flighty. It's okay. I need something flighty in my life because having a toddler running around isn't enough, apparently.

    1. It seems most of us are bees....I've found a couple manatees and more monkeys. I think I've only read about one peacock. Hmmm....maybe we all have knitting ADHD?

  2. Woo hoo, another bee! I've decided it's a good thing, having a toddler pretty much stops you being able to concentrate one thing for any length of time.

    1. Welcome to my world! I usually only knit late at night, after everyone else is asleep, because otherwise I wouldn't get anything done :)

    1. Well, Miss Karen, your socks impress me. It takes me forever to knit socks...though I love having them.

  4. Buzz Buzz! I agree with you fully on the House of Peacock -- while I like the look of beads and embellishments, very rarely will I add them if the pattern does not call for them.

    1. It's not even so much that I can't do it...but I'm just not one of those people that can look at a pattern and make it better or fudge it. I wish I could look at a sweater made for a child and somehow wrangle it to adult size.
