I didn't do a ton of knitting this week. Well, it doesn't feel like I did. But, the progress I have made begs to differ.

I finished up the first of the Veggie Socks on Friday night.

I promptly started the second one yesterday afternoon and I've finished the cuff and have started on the (sort) leg portion.

I also finally finished the cuff on the second of the Vanillaish Rainbow Socks and started on the not-pattern.

But that's it, I swear!

This was a busy week in our world (when aren't we busy?!). Our week started out with a trip to see our friends across the Bay followed by a quick trip to the beach and dinner at a place in Half Moon Bay. At the auction in March, I bid and won a couple of things in a package, specifically a four-pass to Elkus Ranch and a gift certificate to one of the restaurants. Well, Elkus Ranch happened but we didn't use the gift certificate. So, we used it on Sunday.

The boys all took their shoes off and waded a little way into the water (which is still quite cold). I also took a photo of the fog because it was interesting to see how it comes in. The beach we stopped at is next to what we have deemed the World's Weirdest Taco Bell. It wasn't always a Taco Bell, which adds to the quirks. It's right on the beach, and instead of a drive-thru, they have a deck with tables and such and a window where you can order from outside. It's mostly for the surfers, to be honest. They don't want to drag sand and water inside so they order from the outside window.

The restaurant where we had dinner was just a few miles down the coast and the weather was much different there. You can see the sun was out and there wasn't nearly as much fog. Stormageddon was rather uncooperative so Husband gave him his phone, which helped.

Unfortunately, I wound up getting heat exhaustion on Sunday. I had a headache anyway and then it was hot and with the changes in weather from our friends' place to the coast and then home...I was nauseated and dry heaving and sweaty and clammy and it sucked. Thankfully, that was gone by Monday.

I spent a lot of time on auction stuff this week, particularly early in the week. Back to School Night was on Wednesday and I wanted to have sign-up sheets in each of the classrooms and I was going back and forth with the teachers and principal whether we should have an auction team member speak in each class or if we wanted to let the teachers handle it......turns out I got to speak to the parents en masse. There are around 400 kids at the school in Kinder-8th so that translated to....well, there are maybe 50-75 kids that have siblings and not every family had both parents but there were probably 400-500 parents in the gym. Yeah. That happened. And then I had to go to Little Man's classroom.

This was a photo taken on his first day of school. There's also a picture he drew of his first day of school but I'm electing not to share that one. Since he has the same teacher, there aren't many things that are different (I think the day they go to the library is different). Good thing because I was on an adrenaline rush.

Little Man didn't have school on Friday and they don't have it tomorrow (Labor Day) so we've had a long weekend around here. That would have been all fine and wonderful but it's been hot around here. And I don't mean, "oh it's 85ºF and I don't like it." No, I mean it's been hot....like it was over 100ºF yesterday. It doesn't get like that here so hardly anyone has air conditioners, much less central air. We've had our two room air conditioners running since Thursday, we put dark sheets up over windows, and we've been not doing much of anything. We went to the grocery store yesterday for a couple items and the highway, which is usually busy all the time, hardly had any traffic, the grocery store wasn't all that busy, and it was just a little weird. But it's so hot that no one wants to do anything. Maybe go to the beach.

In addition to all that, Stormageddon turned three years old yesterday. And he was using the potty like a champ...until about 6pm when he decided he'd had enough, which was fine. He got some Duplos from us and a different Duplos set from my in-laws, Little Man bought him a Pocoyo t-shirt (translation: he picked it out, I bought it), and we got a random package of superhero capes & masks but we don't know who it's from.

This isn't the cape/mask combo. This is from his Halloween costume. I think. We'll see what happens when Halloween comes along.

A few other photos from our week:

Husband brews beer and last year, we grew four hops vines/plants. We thought they went gangbusters last year......this year, well.......we snapped one of the boards (it was a weak spot, there was a knot in the wood) and even after fixing it, it's still pulling this much.

This Snickers bar spoke to me. Loudly.

And lastly, I found this guy crawling up our wall by our front door on Friday night. I have a friend that's got a PhD in entomology and I knew it was a Praying Mantis but I'd never seen a white one....apparently, this one had just molted.

I hope you've had a lovely weekend. It's been hot here so I've got heatbrain, which is a lot like baby brain....

  2. Yes it is Labour Day here tomorrow too. Long weekends don't hold as much power now I am retired! I love that 'hot mess' bar - I think I can relate.
Good for you on your vegetable socks. Perfect name for the colour I think.

  3. I love how you knit sock heels, and wonder if you can direct me to instructions on how to replicate them.

    1. If you're looking for the heel flap, I nicked it from Hermione's Everyday Socks. If you're looking for the gusset decreases on the bottom, they should be here: http://turtlegirl76.com/2011/11/07/tutorial-double-gusset-heel/

  5. Don't feel bad...I have 'old brain'...not sure which is worse! LOL! Happy Birthday to Stormagedon.....I remember when he was born....and before Little Man was potty trained...it's gone by fast!
I love those veggie socks! Great yarn too. That is amazing how there was fog and then a few miles away the sun is out but the heat is worse than here. We're in the 80's and never got to a 100 this year....high 90's and lots of humidity....but we all have central air....how they lived in the South before central air I have no idea! Glad you have some window units at least. Be careful with heat exhaustion...it can be very dangerous.
Interesting about the taco bell and your hops are amazing! I was going to try and brew beer and make my own wine but I haven't done it yet but if I do I know who to ask!
I have never see a praying mantis that color either...learn something every day! Thanks for sharing your interesting and very busy life! Have a great week!

  6. I've never seen a white praying mantis either. Learned something here. I like the pictures of fog on the beach. I can almost feel the chilly water.

  7. Gosh, your list makes mine look a bit sick!! Wish I was as well organised. I made a short list as I know I'll be making lots of other things that I haven't considered yet. I do charity things and only decide what to make about a month in advance. Lots of people at the beach eh? I'm hanging out for some warmer weather here. Today has been dreadful - 10 degrees celsius and winds like you wouldn't believe.
