Year Eight: Self-Imposed Year of Projects - This "new normal" thing.....it sucks (Update #23)

Happy Sunday from the San Francisco Bay Area! It's going to be hot as balls here today (again) so I'm hunkered down in the house with the kids, Husband, and Puppy, with our room air conditioners running and new blackout curtains on the windows......::sigh:: Let's get going :)

FO's (Finished Objects):

1. Age of Brass & Steam: started 10 August 2018; finished 7 January 2019
2. Sockhead for Little Man: started 29 November 2018; finished 25 January 2019
3. Cowl for Miss Sylvie: started 18 January 2019; finished 9 April 2019

I suppose I would have to actually spend some time knitting in order to finish anything...and we'll get to that ideal in a minute.

Again, I've done very little knitting this week. I think I only worked on the Vanilla Fingerless Mitts...but I made some actual progress. I'm maybe 8 rounds from starting the thumb increase, which is delightful. But that's it.

OMGLSGWTFBBQ Lists

Challenges (this is new for 2019)
1. Knit 2 granny squares a month (average) until I'm out of yarn (for the Granny Square Blanket in my WIP list above - I started with four cakes, I've finished two and started the third...I bought a fifth, though, for more choices): We are into June...I'm on my 9th square. Soooo, that means I'm behind now, which isn't surprising. For June, that means I need to finish the 9th, and start and finish the 10th, 11th, and 12th square.
2. Knit 1 dishcloth a month (average): I've not knit a single one. I really should...

So. California life. It's been getting warmer these last few days, which has led to the need to run the air conditioners. Where we live, very few people have central air. In fact, most people don't even have air conditioners. I don't know how people can live like that. Seriously. We have two large room ACs for the front and living rooms, and we have two window ACs for our bedroom and the back room. We've looked into getting central air put in and it's prohibitively expensive. Also, according to people that have lived here for much longer than we have, it "doesn't get hot here that often," which is a load of crap. But we're good with our AC units and that is that.

In other random events, Little Man has two weeks of school left. He finishes on the 20th, which is late as far as I'm concerned...and then they start back in mid-August. When I was a kid, we finished in the first week of June and didn't go back until the very last week in August and, when I got older the law was changed so that we didn't go back until after September 1st. We basically had three months off in the summer. They don't even have two here. Part of that is because they're still trying to force a pseudo-year-round program in the district. Of course, we complain about it but at the same time, I can't imagine these parents having to cobble together the thousands (yes, thousands) of dollars for summer camps/programs if it were any longer. A week of camp/program for one child can be anywhere from $300-$1000 per week. Then if you have two, you can just double that. Can you imagine trying to cobble together $2000 a week for seven weeks because you have two kids? No. Thank. You. At least this way, it's spread out between summer, fall break, spring break, and winter break.

Enough about that. I'm not here to complain about how much crap costs around here. Okay, maybe a little...keeping it real, yo!

I feel like we've been really busy this week, and we probably have. I know on Wednesday I took the boys over to a friends' condo complex for a pool party....and I remembered to lather them up with sunscreen this time so they didn't get a sunburn. On Friday, the school had the Dads' Club BBQ, which meant a ton of playtime on the playground and a bounce house obstacle course, plus food and cake. We were also supposed to go over to Stormageddon's school for next year but we didn't make it to both and, ultimately, he's going to wind up at the same school as Little Man after next year so....I don't feel so bad about not going to the other one. Yesterday, Little Man had his Cub Scout Bridging Ceremony. He's advanced to a Bear Scout, which is lovely.

Aside from that, it was our usual this and that. Stormageddon's last speech therapy session for the year is tomorrow. I have a meeting about that on Thursday (where we talk to his new speech therapist for next year, discuss the transition, etc.). On Wednesday, Husband and I have a meeting with Little Man's teacher regarding his IEP (because I'm going to push for one - I don't want to get to middle or high school without one). So we have a busy week for us, as well. And I'm still trying to get used to the work-life balance and schedule. I did pretty well last week, I thought...we'll see how things continue.

I don't know when he turned into a little boy! When did it happen?! He was a baby like three minutes ago.....and he's been asking about his birthday, because Daddy had his birthday and some friends have had birthdays and he's asking about his. He seems to think it's tomorrow....everyday. We've looked at the calendar and it's just not sinking in that it's not until September. At least he's cute.

I don't know where Little Man got the idea to make a table setting outside using his sandbox and some chairs and such. He just decided to make a proper table setting. He also made a menu, a drink list, and placecards. Sort of. He said it was for VIPs (and then said that meant mommy, daddy, Jon, and our pilot friends). Puppy somehow got Jon's placecard attached to his butt. I don't know how.

Stormageddon loved swimming on Wednesday. I also have photos of Little Man in the pool but they keep turning out sideways and no amount of editing them to the correct way is helping for the blog. ::sigh::

I know what I forgot to mention. We all had dentist appointments on Thursday. This was Stormageddon's first dentist appointment. He was a little rockstar. He also enjoyed going into the treasure box and his little bag of dentist treats (toothbrush, toothpaste, floss). He was very cooperative.

So, at the Dads' Club BBQ on Friday, I could get him to eat two things: watermelon and tortilla chips. ::sigh:: Also, the Warriors game was on in the background.

These are from Little Man's Bridging Ceremony yesterday. He was the only one from his den to come to the ceremony, but he knew several of the other boys as well (from pack meetings and other pack events mostly...and school). So, there's that.

We also had lunch at a place in Mountain View near Husband's office yesterday. We've only been there a couple of times as a family (because it's in Mountain View, which is like a half-hour drive from our house, and I understand that isn't all that far but there are so many food options around, that we don't often go very far for things like that).

Anyway, I hope you've had a good week and weekend! Let's hope I can get it together...but, let's be honest, this "new normal" thing....it sucks.

  1. I love how your son is a devoted Cub Scout. I only know of one, year round school in the city. And I know it can get hot in San Mateo. Thank goodness for AC. We've been running ours a lot here.
