30. Hermione's Everyday Socks: started March 6, 2012; finished November 20, 2012

I finished up Hermione's Everyday Socks this past week! I was a little worried at the very very end, though. I was all ready to do my Kitchener Stitch on the toe and get them closed up and discovered after doing about three stitches worth that I cannot read properly. I tried to tink back and fix it only coming to the realization that I couldn't figure out how to tink back to fix my mistake so I (very bravely) pulled out my needles, attempted to rip back a row, and put the stitches back on the needles. I say that I attempted to rip back: it didn't rip too well. Soooo....I think I got it fixed and I wound up with 14 stitches on each needle and rather than muck it up even more or try to figure out what the hell I'd done, I just said, "screw it," and Kitchenered my toe. So far, nothing is unraveling so I'm going to assume I caught all the live stitches. I have not properly photographed my socks yet...but they've had a thorough soak in Soak and are drying on my sock blockers. They fit as perfectly as I think they'd ever fit :) So, I suppose that means I'm going to have to owe you another FO Friday.

Speaking of Little Man's Sweater.....::sigh:: It does not fit him very well. In fact, I'd venture a guess that it's actually too small for him. I'm going to attach the buttons and I think it's going to make it's way to Maryland for Sassy Girl...and she can wear it in a year. I'm going to take some measurements before I do that, though (including double checking my gauge).

1. Little Man's Giraffe: started May 11, 2011
2. Icarus Shawl: started March 15, 2010
3. Mama's Vanilla Socks (round 2): started June 29, 2012

So, this means that my WIP list is down to three! I spent quite a bit of time with Little Man's Giraffe this week. I've made the balls for the horns and tail and am working on attaching them to their respective appendage and then to the body. I suspect that this will be done by Christmas.

I also worked on my Vanilla Socks, though I didn't get too far. It's just a lot of stockinette in the round so it can get a little boring. Oh well.

All that's left......

PLANNED HATS (at least 1 more - 12 total for the year)
1. Hermione Hearts Ron
2. Ogre Babies!
3. NIN Hat
4. Godric's Hollow Hat
5. Bergen Street Tuque

I still haven't fully decided which hat I want to work on yet.

Anyway, we had friends up from Los Angeles for Thanksgiving this past week. They came up on Thursday and left yesterday morning. We did the usual holiday stuff (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc.). We went to the Mythbusters Exhibit at the Tech Museum in San Jose on Friday (instead of the insanity that is Black Friday) and then we had a traditional Wisconsin dinner: grilled bratwursts (beer soaked, of course), potato salad, pasta salad, and homemade pickles.

I hope that this week isn't quite as crazy as the last week or so has been, what with people visiting and all. I imagine that things will go much smoother.

That's all I have for you this week! I hope you all had a lovely week and holiday (for those of you in the US) and that this week is just as lovely!

  1. I love how long your finished list is and you did so well on the list.

Thank you for your comments they made me smile and I've the phrase "Its my blog and I'll blog if I want to" going round in my head to the tune of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

    1. I was singing, "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to" in my head but hey, whatever works.

  2. OH boy does that grilled bratwurst sound delicious! How long do you let them soak in beer?
Remember how you didn't even have 20 FOs, yet alone 10? Now you're up to 30! What tremendous progress you're making, Renee!

    1. We throw the brats in with the onion and two cans of cheap beer (or however many are needed to cover them and yes, you can dilute it with water). I think we used Steel Reserve this time. We just boil them until we don't feel like doing it anymore. Then we grill them. It works out pretty well.

  3. Wow! You're amazing! When I first saw your list I thought you were crazy but that's because I am so slow but look at what you've accomplished! I am really flabberghasted! I can only hope that I can get going a little faster although I have actually come a long way if you'd seen me at the beginning! LOL! Great job!!!!!!

    1. I keep thinking I'm slow and then I look at my list. And then I realize that there are 11 hats on there...and a bunch of dishcloths. Those go quickly. Oh well, they're still FOs :)

  4. You're doing awesome! Still going strong at 48 weeks. I've never tried tinking back a graft, but it sounds hard. You can pick up the live stitches a few rows back before frogging with a smaller size needle ... that way you're less likely to lose stitches. Sounds like you made out okay though; dropped stitches usually make themselves known pretty quickly with a bit of tugging :)

    Happy Thanksgiving !

    1. I don't ever want to try to tink back a graft again. It was not fun.

  5. Wow!! You are almost done with everything on your list! That's awesome!!

Sounds like you guys had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! SO nice with friends visiting, but yes, hopefully this week is a bit quieter for you.

    1. I am almost done with everything! And then I get to start all over again...

I don't think I'm going to finish the socks but I should be able to finish the shawl and the giraffe. The giraffe is almost done now...just sewing pieces and adding the hair.

  6. You know, I have never used sock blockers. What do you think? Are they worth it?

    1. I don't know if they're really worth it. Perhaps to get them to lay correctly but I don't know that you really "need" them. Then again, "need" is a funny word. I think the legs on mine need to be skinnier because my socks get a little too stretched out. ::sigh::

  7. Well, congrats on getting your wip down... I can never manage more that 2 at once... even by using notes I tend to screw more than that up...

Nice that things have slowed down for you a bit, but tis the season for the craziness to continue.

  8. You're making amazing progress!

(I'm quite envious of all the people's tales of Thanksgiving weekend when we just had an ordinary wet and grey weekend here in the UK.)
