Year Eight: Self-Imposed Year of Projects - It's a Two-Fer (Update #19 & #20)

Happy Sunday!

FO's (Finished Objects):

1. Age of Brass & Steam: started 10 August 2018; finished 7 January 2019
2. Sockhead for Little Man: started 29 November 2018; finished 25 January 2019
3. Cowl for Miss Sylvie: started 18 January 2019; finished 9 April 2019

I wove in ends on the cowl and it was gifted to Miss Sylvie on May 9th. I think I may have made her cry. Maybe.

This is in it's mostly folded stage. It's probably twice as long as what this photo shows...which really means four times because it's round. It wound up being a little over 23" long, lying flat...so it's about 47" or so around.

Regardless, it was gifted :)

I started a new project using some already wound yarn I had: Vanilla Fingerless Mitts. I've made them before and they're fairly mindless.

Aside from that, I didn't do a lot of knitting. I worked on the Ewetopia Stripey Socks and that was honestly about it. More on all that in a mo.....

So, the past couple of weeks......well, we're having a two-fer update because last week Sunday, I was on a boat and didn't post and I'm super late today because we were still on a boat this morning and didn't get back home until this afternoon.

But, we're home now and we can discuss allllllll the things. Or not.

The week before we left for our cruise, Husband and I were still sick. But we got it together, my father-in-law flew in for the last week and a half (to watch the boys), and then Husband and I were on a boat for the last week.

On Friday afternoon, before we left for our cruise, the boys played some astronaut thing. We have a little NASA costume that was passed to us by friends and it fits Stormageddon perfectly. They were having fun.

But last Saturday, our trip began with a flight to Seattle, Washington to meet with our pilot friends (that live in Washington and went on the cruise with us). We stayed downtown, walked about, went to Pike Place Market, had drinks (see photo below)....then we went up the Space Needle.

Those of you that know me will know that I'm scared of heights. I'm fine once I'm up there in a safe space but going up, coming down, and the movement involved freaks me out. I stood in the elevator going up the Space Needle, facing the wall with the AC blowing on my face. But I was fine at the top. Mostly.

Yes, that is Mt. Rainier in the background. And Century Link and T-Mobile Park are in there also (where the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners, respectively, play).

Last Sunday morning, we were up early and headed to the boat. We waited in line far too long but all was well. We got on the boat, had some lunch, and saw a few sights from the boat.

Both of these photos were taken from the front of our boat. The top one is exactly what it looks like: a Boeing without wings. The train that takes them to the Boeing factory in Seattle goes right by the docks. So, there was literally a train of Boeing 737s heading to the factor. And yes, they're wrapped in green cellophane. The other photo is just the port/docks. Nothing fancy, really.

On our cruise, we made four "land" stops: Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan in Alaska and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. We also saw the glaciers in Glacier Bay

In Juneau, we went panning for gold (and actually found some). It was beautiful by the water, we could see several waterfalls, and it wasn't totally freezing (the water was cold but the temps were in the 50s F).

In Skagway, we got off the boat, wandered about town, found a yarn shop (because of course), and that was about it. Oh, and we split a crab leg between the four of us....it was at least 24" long.

After we got back on the boat, we found someone with a stuffed llama....and this happened:

She's got her own tag on Instagram: #DrunkenSheepBliss (even though she's definitely a llama).

That night, we had hoped to see the Northern Lights....but at 11pm, this was still happening:

Yeah. That's sunset. I took that photo at 11:01pm. No Northern Lights for us. Oh well.

In Ketchikan, we also just got off the ship and wandered about town. Our friends went to see a Lumberjack Show but we didn't feel like joining that one.

The next day, we were at Glacier Bay. I slept in a little bit but I did come out and see the glaciers.

The sound they make when pieces fall off......it's hard to describe. Husband summed it up perfectly: it sounds like cheap/fake thunder on a movie set. Like you hear it and think, "there's no way that can be real" and then you see chunks of ice falling off into the water. It's surreal and sad and amazing all at the same time.

And then.......we were in for a rough night. The boat was rocking and rolling, we weren't feeling too well.....spent most of the next day sleeping/sick. Thankfully by the time we got to Victoria, things had calmed down and we were okay. We got off the boat for maybe an hour (we were only in port for 4 hours), walked out to a lighthouse, and then we saw wild sea otters.

There were three otters and they were playing and then as we walked back around, they swam alongside us (well, along the wall). They were fun to watch.

We got back around mid-afternoon today....and then came the unpacking and the laundry and the hugs and kisses from the boys and the.......yeah.

So, you have a two-fer :) I hope you've had a lovely couple of weeks!

  1. What a cruise! Alaska looks awesome to visit. How nice to get away and have some adult time. You and your husband are too cute.
