Pattern: Elefante by Susan B. Anderson
Time Frame: started December 19, 2014; finished December 28, 2014
Yarn: Purl Essence Tranquil in Honeysuckle (less than 1 skein - this yarn was part of a one-pound mill end bag from JoAnn Fabrics...took some asking and someone told me what it was)
Needles: US #6 (4 mm) Signature DPNs
Size: Whatever size it came out...
Modification(s): The original was done using scraps of worsted and US #4 (3.5 mm) needles. My yarn is still worsted but I used larger needles. I didn't want to have such a tight gauge so she turned out a bit larger than the original. I also used variegated yarn, rather than making the stripes myself. The thing I'm most proud of, however, are her ears. The pattern calls for crocheting the ears and I don't crochet. I don't lack the capability; I just don't...and I didn't really want to learn for the sake of this pattern. I looked through the "helpful notes" for this pattern and found a few that were knitted but they weren't quite what I was looking for. I wanted stockinette, knit flat, and the only sewing involved was whipstitching it to the head. The closest was a garter version, which I borrowed from, tweaked it, and lo, I have stockinette ears with a two-stitch garter boarder. And they're perfectly floppy and I love it.
Thoughts: This is intended to be a gift for Husband's youngest niece for her third birthday...which isn't until June. I wasn't sure how long she was going to take as Little Man's Giraffe (by the same designer) took me about seven months to make. So...I thought I had better start early. And then it only took me nine days to finish. Oops. At least it's done. I may have to make another one. She turned out so adorable...and Little Man seems to love her. Oh well. Perhaps one for Stormageddon. He doesn't have a knitted toy from Mama yet...
