So........our stuff finally arrived! The house looks like a bomb went off but our stuff is here and we're working through unpacking. It's kind of a hot mess around here, which is fine other than the constant feeling of must go faster that I have. This is, unfortunately, compounded by the fact that I can't unpack a bunch of stuff in the kitchen because we're getting new counters put in tomorrow...so a bunch of cabinets had to come down because the counters will be 1/4" higher than the current ones and some cabinets sat on top of counters. I put in a request for my little brother to come over and help us. He works in construction and is a carpenter by trade so he's got more practiced hands than we do.
On either side of the stove were two cabinets that went down to the counters. So those came down.
On the other side of the kitchen by the fridge, we had another one that needed to come down (bonus little brother on the ladder & counter). Unfortunately, we discovered some WTFery in our kitchen....like the dryer vent that was hidden behind a teeny little corner cabinet that needed to come out. WHAT?! Why is my dryer (1) vented up through my kitchen and (2) visible in my kitchen at all?!
But......our stuff is here. And unpacking is happening. The boys have their beds and are sleeping in their rooms. Husband and I, unfortunately, are not sleeping in our bed. Turns out that we're missing a pretty big chunk of our bed. We have had a Sleep Number for quite awhile (13ish years). The one we have is basically two twin size air mattresses connected to the pump that are separated by thick foam supports. Those foam pieces are missing. So we can't finish putting our bed together. Thankfully we can order the pieces...but the bed is 13 years old and one of the mattresses leaks somewhere, not terribly but enough to be annoying every couple weeks when we decide it needs some filling. We wound up ordering a new Sleep Number bed, which will be here Valentine's Day....but in the meantime, we ordered the foam pieces so we can at least sleep in our bed for a hot minute. As it is, I'm still sleeping on the couch and Husband is downstairs.
Stormageddon was home all week. He spiked a fever last Sunday so I took him in for another Covid test on Monday, which came back positive. So, the both boys have had Covid and Husband and I have likely had it, as well, though we never tested and were basically quarantined and asymptomatic anyway. Stormageddon was feeling perfectly fine by Tuesday but I had to keep him home all week for the quarantine period. Little Man was, thankfully, back at school.....except when he threw up at school on Thursday and wound up having to come home and then stay home on Friday. ::sigh:: If it's not one thing it's another.
But first, let's talk about the hot mess that was the arrival of our stuff. This is the 53' semi tractor-trailer at the end of our driveway. On said truck were our boxes and furniture and so on. The driver decided he couldn't get up the driveway, either by pulling in forward or maneuvering around to come up backwards. The driver was not responsible for moving things from the truck into the house; we had three dudes that were doing that.
The three dudes had to hoof it from the end of our driveway, up the driveway with our stuff, and then distribute everything to whichever room we said. It was cold. I made hot chocolate. And coffee. And there were breaks to close the doors and warm up the house. Puppy was made. Little Man was at school, thankfully, though Stormageddon was home (hiding in his room).
Proof that stuff has arrived! Boxes in the dining room!
So, we've spent the past few days trying to unpack things here and there. The two big things were Husband's office set-up and the kitchen...to a point. We knew we were getting new counters so there are things that are not unpacked yet (like cookbooks) but as soon as everything is back in place, we'll get that done. Husband's office space is ready to go, which is good.
With the kitchen being a hot mess, I have no sink or dishwasher hooked up in the kitchen so I'm washing dishes in the laundry room sink by hand (which is fine for a couple days). The microwave is in the living room on our buffet/sideboard. But at least the fridge and stove are accessible and usable.
Yesterday, after my brother left, we decided to run a few errands and go visiting. We bought a nail gun because we've been talking about it for awhile. We also picked up a few other things at Home Depot. Then we drove to my great-aunt & great-uncle's house to see them (they're 79 and 82). Then we swung over to a cheese shop that my bestie works at part-time and dropped like $130 on various things (mostly cheese but a few other things as well). Then we went to see her mom before going out to dinner with said bestie at the Mexican restaurant in my hometown.
Queso dip and margaritas are required.
Today, we've done a bit of this and that. Husband did some work on the under-cabinet lights that we're replacing. The ones that were there were halogen bulbs and half were broken. So we picked up some LED lights and he put those in. We're going to do light strips for the upper cabinet ones but we can't do that until the cabinets are back up. I worked on flattening and tying up some boxes and unpacking/moving liquor to the downstairs bar area. I also did a little bit of work with Husband where we put a drawer back together, changed out some knobs, and moved the mini-fridge back into place. Oh, and cleaned up dog pee. ::sigh::
Happy Sunday! I hope you're having a lovely weekend!
Is the entire interior of your home logs? I love it. Was this srmi drivers first load? I would have told him to come up and over the front yard. She's! Glad you got your belongings...finally.
ReplyDeleteExciting, the new changes and how lovely to be near all of those you love dearly.
ReplyDeleteWow - this was a commando of a post. I'm in need of margaritas just READING about your move-in "excitement". I hope you can start getting things put to rights shortly and that everyone stays healthy! Wishing you a much less busy/stressful week ahead.
ReplyDeleteNever a dull moment at your house. Glad your stuff arrived. Thank God for the three strapping lads to move all that stuff from truck to house. Oh my@!
ReplyDeleteYay for all your stuff arriving! We recently moved, twice in one year, so I know the feeling of having all your stuff in boxes. It’s the best feeling when your stuff is out and the house becomes your home!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your stuff FINALLY arrived! Its rather unfortunate that some pieces of your bed went missing, that sounds annoying! Can you move the old bed (with new foam pieces) into a guest room once you get your new bed?
