Year NINE: Self-Imposed Year of Projects - Have gun, will travel, reads the heart of a man... (Update #41)

Happy Monday! I'm a day late and a dollar short because we're traveling right now. The boys are on fall break and we decided to meet Husband's parents in South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore.

So, that's why this is all late and such :)

Up until we left for our trip on Saturday morning, I hadn't done a lot of knitting. I did work on a granny square and maybe some rounds on the Vanilla Sock. Then we left for our trip. I spent a good chunk of time working on the cowl and I've made some decent progress. I'm on the 4th section of the pattern (out of six) and I was on the ribbing when I started. I don't know that I'll have it finished by the time we get home but you never know. I also worked on the Vanilla Socks in the car. In addition to those two projects, I also brought the Minecraft Socks and the granny squares.

We'll see how it goes.

Because we're traveling, I've not had time to update my photos, which means this is a photoless post. Next week, I'll probably have double the photos!

The past week has been pretty good, for the most part. The boys had their school things happening, of course. A new Nerf gun was added to our arsenal and I'm pretty sure a Nerf War happened this past week. Stormageddon and I played some games of Connect Four, and then he played with Little Man. Little Man caught another snake in the yard (same kind as before but a bigger one). This one coiled around him a bit, looking for warmth.

We left on Saturday morning for our trip. We drove from San Francisco to Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday. We went through Reno, Nevada, and we got to see the salt flats (where people go to drive cars really fast on, essentially, desert). No, we didn't stop at Jimmy Beans (woe!). The drive was mostly uneventful except when we almost died. Someone didn't properly tie down a wrought-iron table in the back of a pickup truck and it went flying. It almost hit us and then we almost it it. Husband couldn't scoot around it (it was that close to my car) so I had to get out of the car on the left shoulder on an interstate highway to move it so we could keep going.

Do not recommend.

Sunday we drove from Salt Lake City to where we're staying, south of Rapid City, South Dakota. The drive through Wyoming was....flat, kind of boring, but still pretty....until we hit rain and sleet on a back state highway.

Again, do not recommend.

That brings us to today. We saw Mt. Rushmore and went to Crazy Horse (I could write an entire blog post about the Crazy Horse Memorial and it wouldn't be pretty - let's just say that the Sioux tribe wants it destroyed), plus drove about an hour east and stopped at Wall Drug (because why not?), before getting Culver's in Rapid City. Culver's is a Wisconsin fast food chain. I mean, there are locations outside of Wisconsin but not many. There are three in Rapid City but then there are none west of there (except a random one in Tuscon, Arizona).

Tomorrow, we're going to relax and we head out on Thursday. Our original plan was to go south to the Grand Canyon, driving through part of the Rockies in Colorado but we found out that damn near everything is closed at the Grand Canyon. We haven't decided for sure how we're going to proceed but we'll probably look to head home on Thursday instead of going southward.

Anyway, I hope you've had a lovely week and weekend and start of the week!

  2. Want you to know we have a Culver's in Austin, TX, so if you come here you will feel right at home. Also the best yarn store in the world, Hill Country Weavers, so you can shop after eating. I've enjoyed your posts for a long time, so if you ever get down this way, would love to meet.

  3. Hey! We have a Culver's in Mesa Arizona too! It is a favorite hang out for many of us. My favorite item is the salted caramel concrete made with Reese's peanut butter cups. Oh my...............so good. It is a meal in itself!

  4. I have fond memories of Wall Drug (from 2002). I'm extra excited to take my kids there in the next couple of years. My parents didn't have the same enthusiasm I did regarding their recent visit; no accounting for taste, I guess.

  5. So glad you safely avoided furniture falling off a truck. How weird that just this week I was remembering my co-worker Andy. No idea why. Andy was killed by a tire falling off a truck. Now it's against the law to haul tires like that. We have a Culver's in Cincinnati, and one very near where we rent in Naples, FL. I'll have to check it out.
