Year the TENTH: Self-Imposed Year of Projects - Aaaannnnd, I'm late. Again. (Update #5)

Happy Sunday! I'm running a bit behind because I managed to forget that yesterday was Saturday so I'm behind. Again. Let's get going, though :)

FOs (Finished Objects)
1.
Greenwood Fiberworks Dark BFL (Viktor): started 28 June 2020; finished 17 January 2021
2. Boo-Yah: started 26 January 2021; finished 27 January 2021

Oh look, I finished a project this week. And it was a one-day type project. Stormageddon has been incessantly asking for me to make him a wee little ghostie for the past couple of weeks (and prior to that, he was asking at least once a week since Halloween). I finally pulled out the yarn and made him his wee little ghostie. I used some leftover yarn that I have had hanging around in my stash since probably 2009 or so....I mean, I made a pair of socks out of the yarn originally but then I had a good amount left and it's been hanging around ever since. I warned him that his ghost would be smaller than mine; he didn't seem to care. He helped me pick out buttons for the eyes. He wanted the pinkish red ones because they were bright. He also picked out the yarn from my stash.

He's quite pleased with his wee little ghostie and has been taking it all over the house with him. He's also sleeping with it (and his bunny, kitty, and puppy, and a bunch of other stuffed animals). So, I think we can say that he likes it.

This week, I cannot say a lot of knitting was accomplished. It's not that I didn't do any knitting but I truly did very little. I made the wee little ghostie and I think I worked on the Vanilla Socks and that was honestly about it. Oh, I forgot...I also knit on some teething cloths or makeup remover cloths or whatever. They're small, square, cotton cloths. I've not made project pages or anything because they take so little yarn and really, I don't need to make the project pages. I had other things going on, apparently. Or not. Whatever. I did some knitting and that was it.

This week was kind of busy, in some ways. We had a PTA Association meeting this week, which meant I needed to make sure our last meeting's minutes were up-to-scratch (they mostly were). PTA meetings mess with my weeks. I wind up doing extra PTA work, which is fine, but it happens in a flurry. I actually need to do some later today, as well, as we have our PTA Board meeting on Tuesday. So, there's that.

Little Man has been working on his Mission Project. In the United States, all fourth graders  seem to learn their state's history. It was true when I was a kid in Wisconsin, most of my friends remember doing it in fourth grade, as well, in other states. So, apparently that's still a thing. Here in California, that means they learn about explorers coming up from Mexico and down from Russia (via Alaska), the native people, the geography, and how the state was settled. That means the kids spend time learning about the California Missions, of which there are twenty-one. For his school, this means they choose one of the Missions, make a model, and write a paper about it. His teacher's only "rule" about the model is that we can't go buy Mission Kits from the craft stores. She didn't say we couldn't 3D print them. Little Man picked Mission San Francisco de Asis, otherwise known as Mission Dolores, which is the Mission in San Francisco. Currently, his Mission has been printed, he did the decorating, but we still need to work on the landscaping. Mission Dolores has a few things going for it. It is the oldest intact building in all of San Francisco, as it was built in 1791 or so. It survived the 1906 earthquake, while the original basilica next to it fell (a new one was built in 1913). The San Francisco Fire Department actually blew up the school and church across the street to stop the post-earthquake fires from actually reaching the original Mission building. It also has the only cemetery in all of San Francisco. It's one of those interesting things. There are not a lot of cemeteries in the Bay Area. They're all kind of kept to a few areas. Colma, California, for example. The joke about Colma is that there are more dead people than living. It's "Welcome to Colma" sign is a gravestone. Not even kidding. The Bay Area military cemetery, Golden Gate National Cemetery, is in San Bruno, across from Tanforan Mall, which once was the site of a Japanese Internment Camp during WWII. I know of very few cemeteries in the Bay Area. There's a big one in Oakland. I have a strange love of cemeteries. Husband hates them. When we were looking at houses, a few of the butted up to Golden Gate National Cemetery and Husband noped right out of there. I would have loved it. I think it's because, when I was a kid, I lived a few blocks from one of the cemeteries in my hometown, where the family my hometown was named for is buried. I just really like cemeteries.

Little Man drew the cover for his paper the other day during class (don't worry, that's what he was supposed to be doing). I'm super proud of his work. The actual Mission is the small building on the left. That's the one that has survived since 1791. The larger, more "traditional " church is the basilica, which was built in 1913, after the original fell after the 1906 earthquake.

Anyway, he's been working on that. We need to get the books so he can write his paper. I have a couple to pick up from the library this week and his school librarian grabbed a few for him that we picked up in the office this past week. He should be set.

Stormageddon has been doing some drawing this week. They are studying penguins and the south pole so his teacher found a couple of "how to draw penguin" videos on YouTube. This one was for an emperor penguin. He did so well. He had a little help from me (making the belly fatter, getting the legs in the right spot, making his eye darker) but this was almost entirely his work.

Of course, he wasn't the only one that was drawing this week. I also caught Little Man drawing at the counter last night. He saw our fruit bowl and decided he had to draw it. I also took a video of that, for his teacher....which reminds me, I need to send it to her.

Aside from drawing, there has been therapy putty play. Stormageddon got to play with his therapy putty and some teeny Mr. Potato Head pieces the other day. I can't let him have the putty freely because I know he'll leave it on something like the carpet or a shirt and then we'll have a big mess. But, I can let him have it under supervision. He made quite a few silly characters.

And lastly, I've been dealing with this crap. I've had ankle issues since I was like ten years old. Sprains mostly, never broken anything that I know of, tight tendons, the whole thing. My ankles have been a hot mess for like 30 years. Recently, it's been getting difficult to walk without pain. Based on symptoms and how many times I've sprained my ankles over the last 30 years, I'm betting that it's tendonitis, though arthritis is also possible. I'm doing all the right things and we'll see how things go. For now, I'm wearing the brace when I'm up and around, just in case. The pain is sporadic with no rhyme or reason. It might not hurt at all and then it'll just be painful. Or it might just be painful for a hot minute while I walk across the house. Or it might be painful all day. I would just like a little consistency! Whatever, it's fine.

I hope you've had a lovely week and weekend. Hopefully I won't be late next week. Or I will. Whatever. it's fine. February starts tomorrow! Woot woot!

  5. I love the wee ghostie, very cute. I hope you can get a long term solution for your ankle, with all you have on the go it must be a nightmare. I guess it affects your spinning too!

  6. Sorry you were in pain; I hope by now you are feeling better. Tendonitis sucks; damn aging. The wee ghostie reminds me of the ghost in Ghost Busters, LOL. Love seeing the kids' work.
