A few things happened this week in fibery tales. Viktor, my Majacraft Pioneer spinning wheel, had his first ever bath. I've had this wheel for 10.5 years now and I've never given him a proper bath. Now, to be fair, I've dusted him off with compressed air or by blowing and I've replaced worn out parts as needed...but never a true bath. So, I bought some Murphy's Oil Soap, diluted it, and washed my wheel (followed by wiping down with a clean, damp cloth). It wasn't actually that dirty but there were a couple places where dust had accumulated (under the treadles, for example). In addition to that, I also oiled up a few things that needed it.

And then, of course, because Tour de Fleece started yesterday, I did some actual spinning. I had a ball of roving of some sort, about 30 g. It wasn't the best processed stuff; there were little bits of VM and some tiny matted areas (they look like the pilling you find on sweaters) but I split it into 14 g and 16 g and spun it onto two different bobbins. I plan to ply it today. No photo, though, because I'm definitely lazy. It won't take very long as it was only an ounce or so to begin with. Given that it was a fairly coarse, sticky wool, I anticipate something along the lines of a worsted weight ones it's all said and done. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it but that's not unusual.

Aside from spinning, I also worked on the Rose City Rollers. I'm still working on the heel decreases but I'm almost finished with those.

And then, because of who I am as a person, I bought some yarn this past week. A college acquaintance of mine was a test knitter for the Lakeline Tank by Ashley Lillis and I fell in love and lo, she has inclusiveish sizing so I bought the pattern (via not Ravelry) and went hunting in my stash for a suitable yarn.....and found none. I mean, I found plenty of yarn but I either didn't have enough of it or it was wool and this calls for a cotton, or linen, or something along those lines. I looked online and I could have gotten some stupidly expensive fancy cotton or linen and I went to JoAnn's and found something suitable and ordered something else suitable (two different yarns) so I think I'm going to wind up making two of these. Oops.

But that's it! I think...

Here in California, things have been quiet. I didn't even take that many photos. I've been trying to work outside because the weather hasn't been too terrible. Not that I have any actual "work" to do but, you know, the things I do....

We tackled the boys' rooms this week. Little Man and I went through all his clothes and pulled out all the stuff that's too small for him (to either pass to Stormageddon or get rid of). We also took an inventory of what he needs and ordered a few things (pants, shorts, and socks). He also pulled out his ravine (his words, not mine) and went through that pile. Then he shoved everything back in once he sorted and put a few things away. ::eyeroll::

Stormageddon's room was a bit more intense. We finished going through piles of paperwork  from school (he's pretty ruthless for the most part), excavated under his bed, and went through all his clothes. I have at least six paper grocery bags filled with clothes that he's outgrown. I also pulled down the bins of Little Man's hand-me-downs and we refilled his clothes and took an inventory of what he's missing (pants & shorts) and I bought him a few of those. He always gets excited when I pull the bins down to pull out the clothes from his big brother. He gets a whole new wardrobe in an instant.

This is his pile of paperwork from the first round (that he threw out). There was a much larger pile for the second round. The first one was probably 3" tall. It was almost entirely made up of school papers that we don't need. He did keep a couple of things but most of it was tossed without much care (thankfully).

Other than that, not much has been happening around here. I'm trying to get our cucumbers to grow up a trellis instead of along the ground. We'll see how it goes. So far, it's going...I'll need to probably retie them in a week or two.

We are also growing tomatoes and dill. The dill took off once we got different potting soil for it. We have had nothing but trouble with the dill and now it's HUGE.

We also have a small rosemary bush. That one is going but it needs a little help.

During my time outside, Puppy tends to hang out with me, in his chair, and nap. He's such a lazy dog sometimes.

Stormageddon has been playing video games. When I can get him to actually sit down (which isn't often - I'm constantly telling him to sit down when he's playing), he tends to sit like this. I'm not sure how he can do that; it makes me hurt just looking at him.

He's such a silly kid sometimes.

I took the boys to Junipero Serra Park this past week, as well. We were looking for the 54' slide, which we didn't find (maybe on another trip). Instead, we made new friends. There's a creek (of sorts) going through the section we were in and a couple of boys who turned out to be the same ages as Stormageddon and Little Man, were building a damn in the water. So, my boys joined them and they had a lot of fun. And now major mishaps like falling into the water! I think we had a scraped knee and some slivers.

This week, there isn't much planned. Maybe I'll take the kids on a hike or something. We'll see how it goes.

I hope you've had a lovely week and weekend!

  2. Now you make me think I should give my wheel a bath! I also am spinning fibre with lots of pills and neps. It's very annoying but I have 200 gms of it, so don't want to give up. I have found carding it into rolags helps a bit. Your puppy is such a big beautiful boy!
