I've been focusing on the baby blanket this week. I'm in the home stretch for the first one. I'm on the moss stitch border, which means I'm less than four pattern repeats from finishing. I may actually have my first FO next weekend! Maybe.

I do have a partial FO....I mean, it counts in the LSG Monthly Thread(s) on Ravelry and Discord but I don't count it as an FO here. I finished up the first half(ish) of the Mixed BFL on the first bobbin on my new wheel, Annie.

I know it looks small on here but the bobbin is huge. It's made to hold 16 oz of fiber. So 4 oz is....tiny. I also started the second bobbin, another 16 oz. I didn't have a lot to do. I think the last little bit took me a half-hour at most. And that likely included switching the bobbin and starting on the second one. So 🤷

I had intended to lay out all the granny squares to figure out what size I wanted the blanket but that didn't happen this week. Maybe this upcoming week? We'll see how things do.

That's about it, though. It was kind of a "all baby blanket all the time" kind of week. That's fine, I need to get those done and shipped. After that, I may have to pause everything else and work on toys to replace the ones that were tossed due to smoke damage at my sister-in-law's house. I have them on the list, which is good. I need to dig out the yarn or pick up something new.

This week has been hot. Like ridiculously hot. We skipped spring and ran right into summer this past week. It was in the 90s and humid and sticky and just generally icky. The good news is that all the trees decided to go poof...but the bad news is, of course, the amount of pollen. So. Much. Pollen. I didn't get out to check the bees until today and we stopped work on our garden because it was so hot. It looks like I'll be putting fencing up this week. ::sigh:: I hate dealing with chicken wire. I'll get there.

Thankfully, the weather broke this morning and it hasn't been a sauna. We had storms roll through Friday night, which also helped. Further east of us there were places that had hail and gusty winds. We just had the thunder, lightning, and rain. Now, it seems, we're back to some semblance of "normal" for this time of year.

In other random events, both boys had field trips this week. Little Man went to Cave of the Mounds on Friday. Both Husband and I have been there and I've always loved it. It was so hot on Friday that being down in a cave sounded like a good idea to me. But, alas, I was on Stormageddon's field trip to the Aldo Leopold Nature Center. The kids were so excited to dig with nets in the pond and see the baby geese. I mean, there were other things, as well, but those two really stuck out.

With everything blooming, I've been waiting to see what kind of annuals are in my yard. Apparently the previous owners liked tulips. We've got a few that have popped up. And some daffodils. And some.....I don't know whats because they haven't actually come up yet. So, we'll see. Surprises all around. And Little Man plucked me a tulip from the yard and I put it in a cup with water.

I took Little Man to my hometown yesterday for our heritage celebration, Syttende Mai. We basically ate our way up Main Street. We had "breakfast" at the Sons of Norway: fruktsuppe (fruit soup), sandbakkles (kind of like a shortbread cookie that's like a small dish), and Norwegian fry donuts. Then we wound up getting a donut at the bakery, cheese curds, and more food. I took a photo of Little Man at the bakery eating his cheese curds.

We also stopped to see my bestie at work on our way home. Good times.

This morning, I spent a little time with my bees. They're doing what they should be, as far as I can tell. They're building out their combs and one of the hives has capped brood, which means babies and honey. I'm a little concerned as one hive has capped brood but the other does not...but I see evidence that they're working so I'm not super concerned yet. I may ask our friends that have been keeping bees for 14 years if they want to give my girls a look as they have more practiced eyes. I'll probably check them again in a few days.

Aside from that, not much has been happening. I hope you've had a lovely week and weekend!

  1. what did your bees think of the heat. At our school when we had a heat wave the bees all swarmed out of their boxes to hang out in the Lilac trees. Quite the sight!

  3. Sounds like there might be a baby blanket done very soon! I was wondering if you have A/C in your home there. My brother and his family lived in Appleton for years and all they had were window units. I almost melted there, one summer, with the humidity and heat. The window unit did nothing for me. The Norwegian Heritage festival sounds like it was a great time. How nice to be able to share some of you childhood with your children. Watching what pops up in your garden this year will be quite an adventure. Tulips are a nice surprise to see as are daffodils. I hope your bees are all ok and both hives will be buzzing away soon.
