Missed It Monday: Coming Clean

Sooooooo........I need to be honest with y'all for a moment (not that I'm not normally honest but, it'll make sense in a moment).

My Self-Imposed Year of Projects update yesterday talked about how I was working on both my Vanilla Socks and my Eat Your Monkey Socks and how I had finished turning the heel on both socks and that I'm now ready to start working on the foot......

Yeah. About that. I did get the heel flap and turn done on my Vanilla Socks. I did not, however, get it done on my Monkey Socks. When I started writing the post, it was Thursday night (and I finished it on Friday)...I honestly thought that I was going to get the heel flap and turn done on my Monkey Socks before it posted on Sunday morning.

In short, I'm a liar and I need to apologize for it. I'm sorry. I fibbed on my Self-Imposed Year of Projects post from yesterday. I do, however, intend to get the heel flap and turn done soon enough.

::sigh::

I hope you all have a lovely day :)

Missed It Monday: The Travel Edition

Happy Monday!

We arrived back in California late last night (early this morning?). Our flight from Milwaukee (Wisconsin) to Minneapolis/St. Paul (Minnesota) was fairly uneventful. The plane wasn't even half full. Little Man spent most of that flight watching an episode of Shaun the Sheep on Husband's iPad. He was very upset when we had to turn it off and screamed a lot but, luckily (?) we were near the engines in the back so no one really heard. Our flight from Minneaplis/St. Paul to San Francisco was uneventful but annoying. The flight was almost full (I think there were maybe 7 or 8 empty seats on the entire flight) and there were a bunch of pretentious jerks on this flight. I know California is a fairly selfish culture but some of these people needed to be slapped. Hard. One lady kept insisting that her bag would fit under the seat or in an overhead compartment. It didn't fit under the seats so she started taking other people's bags out of the overhead compartments so she could fit her (EMPTY) bag, even though all the overhead compartments were full. Seriously. Her bag was E-M-P-T-Y empty! She even said it was empty! And she refused to check it. She wanted everyone else to check their bag so she could fit hers in an overhead compartment. Her bag didn't even fit in an overhead compartment! She also insisted that her seat was changed last minute at the counter right before we got on the plane but they refused to print her a new boarding pass. She kept saying she was supposed to have three seats to herself because her empty bag needed a seat. Then there was the family of three across the aisle from us, mom and her two daughters (2 years and maybe 8 years old). The 8 year old was fine. She read her book and slept. The 2 year old was a fairly typical 2 year old that didn't have anything to do. She screamed a lot, threw tantrums, screamed some more and her mother just sat there, doing absolutely nothing to calm her. In fact, mom kept shoving her off because she was sleeping. I wouldn't have cared if Little Man had been awake but he was sleeping and every time she really started up with the screaming, she woke him up. I was ready to get up and slap the mother; I was so disgusted with her. Also, I was trying to sleep. The three people directly in front of us were trying to sleep. The three people in front of them were trying to sleep.

It was not a fun time.

We walked into our apartment around 1:50am. Little Man was fully awake by then but luckily went down for the night fairly easily.

Because we spent the weekend in Wisconsin, my days are all messed up. In my head, it should be some other day than Monday. I know it's Monday but my brain wants to keep thinking that it's Saturday or Sunday and by the time WIP Wednesday or FO Friday come around, I probably won't have anything ready. ::sigh::

Anyway, I expect that the next few weeks will be a bit scatterbrained. That's fine. It's the helliday season and it happens every year.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. If I can get some photos from Husband from the weekend/wedding, I shall share. I think there's a good one of me motorboating the bride. Just sayin'.

Missed It Monday

Happy Monday :)

I apparently have a problem with starting projects that aren't on my Self-Imposed Year of Projects lists...oops. It's not like I'm doing anything fancy or huge but I have an issue with making a scarf for one five year old and not the other one (one of my best friends' kids and Husband's niece - they're about 3 months apart in age)...and then I can't leave out the other two (best friends' 11 year old son and Husband's other niece...but she's too little for scarves right now).

Soooo...I started a(nother) scarf yesterday. I had been digging in my stash, looking for something else, when I came across a bunch of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (I think I found four skeins). Each skein is 106 yds (which isn't quite double what the skein was of the Lion Brand Bouclé that I used in the scarf I made the other day...but it's close). I'm thinking that I'll make a scarf for the boy and his sister will get the scarf I already made. Then I'll make another scarf for Sweet Girl and perhaps a matching hat (depending on how much yarn I have left - which should be enough for both).

This also means that I've added another project (well, three, technically) to my Self-Imposed Year of Projects list. ::sigh::

In other random thingies going on, Little Man and Husband spent some time in the pool over the weekend. Little Man is such a water baby. He has to get that from Husband because I don't like pools, lakes, rivers, streams, or the ocean. I think it's because when I was little, the daycare staff used to drop me off the diving board into the deep end of the pool...and I never learned to swim properly. So, they went into the pool. It was a bit cold but that, apparently, didn't bother Little Man.

Missed It Monday

I feel like yesterday's Self-Imposed Year of Projects update was a little......brusque. Perhaps that's because I wrote the post a few days early and didn't have time to go back and edit it properly. Or perhaps it's because I didn't have much to say. Or not.

Whatever.

It's time for Missed It Monday: a day to talk about all the things we forgot to mention over the weekend :)

First of all, I've completed a couple things...not that I've picked up a camera to photograph them properly but that's not the point.

I finished the first of my Hermione's Everyday Socks. I actually finished it on Friday and neglected to mention it on yesterday's post. It fits exactly as a sock should fit...and that Double Gusset Heel gives me heel a little squeeze that I'm rather fond of.

I've also been on a designing kick...which means I've been on a knitting kick. I've been wanting to work on some different stitches so I've been making dishcloths. I've finished one dishcloth (yesterday afternoon) and I started another one using a different stitch pattern.

I'm debating on what I want to do with the finished dishcloths and/or the patterns involved. I'm thinking of making a 12 pattern collection and selling it via Ravelry or Etsy (or both) for $4 or something. I have no idea. Or maybe a bigger collection. And then there are the actual finished dishcloths...I suppose Christmas is coming up.

I have no idea what started this kick other than I was looking for some more instant gratification. I can make a dishcloth in a couple hours, depending on how detailed the pattern is. I also have a bunch of cotton yarn that I need to do something with...

So, I've finished a dishcloth and a sock. That's pretty good for me.

In other non-knitting things, Little Man probably has allergies. He hasn't been sleeping well, is all congested at night, and is fine during the day. I had him to the doctor on Thursday and she's pretty sure it's allergies. ::sigh:: Poor kiddo.

We went to San Mateo on Saturday night for dinner at The Melting Pot. It's the nearest one. Our 3rd wedding anniversary is on Wednesday so we went out to sort of celebrate. We can't celebrate as much as we'd like because we have Little Man with us and we had a good 45 minute drive but we still had fun.

Puppy is getting neutered this weekend while we're gone. We haven't told him, yet...not that he'd understand. There's not really any point to breeding him because he has no champion lineage...even though he's a rare liver & white Brittany. And he's been trying to hump here and there and we just don't want to deal with it. So while we're on our cruise, he'll be getting fixed. I bring him in on Thursday afternoon and we'll pick him up on Tuesday sometime.

I think that's about all that's going on in my little neck of the woods (corner of suburbia?). I hope you have a grand week :)

Missed it Monday: Swaps and an FO...

It's Monday and I have something to share that just didn't fit in anywhere else. Well...a couple somethings, really.

One of the groups I belong to on Ravelry is solely dedicated to Doctor Who swaps (yes, I'm a total geek, get over it). We did our second Doctor Who swap and I received my package on Friday from KniftyKnittingMom in Fresno, CA.

It had lovely things and I'm going to show them to you :)

When I opened up the box, this is what it looked like (yes, the envelope was even upside down - I thought I'd be completely realistic rather than turn it around).

Upon taking out the envelope and the half of a bubble envelope, I found this:

Little Man couldn't resist getting into the box with me. I didn't want him to break anything (if there was something breakable) so I had to keep deterring him. He was not pleased.

The first thing I pulled out was a curiously wrapped red.....something (turned out to be chocolate). It was red, obviously, with a little label that read "Bow Ties are cool!" If you're not familiar with the newest seasons of Doctor Who, the Doctor (played by Matt Smith) wears a red bow tie...and adamantly claims that bow ties are cool.

I discovered that there were several of these scattered throughout the package.

The next thing I pulled out was a bar of emergency chocolate. Now, perhaps I'm a bit misguided but I think all emergencies require chocolate...

The next item I pulled out from the box was a little notions case (from Nancy's KnitKnacks, if I'm not mistaken). It is, of course, Tardis blue :)

A large bar of European chocolate followed...I'm surprised I haven't scarfed this down yet.

Sock yarn? Yes, please. Zitron Trekking XXL was the brand of sock yarn I used to make my first ever pair of socks (that are way too large in the cuff but otherwise are lovely - I wear them around the house a lot). I know this yarn is grand so I was excited to have it in my stash :)

Something breakable. See? I was right to not let Little Man help pull everything out. He probably would have broken this. I'm not sure if it's microwave or dishwasher safe though I suspect that it is...I'll have to ask. Of course, it has a Tardis :)

I'll admit that when I first pulled these out, I was a little confused because I couldn't determine what they were. Silly me. How could I not recognize stitch markers?

Hand lotion. I always always always have dry, cracking hands all winter long. I'm just that way. So, I spend most of the winter slathering my entire body in lotion (not just my hands). So, this will be used...

I found a couple of tea bags, some hot chocolate mix, and some hot apple cider mix. I took two photos because I couldn't get it all in one photo properly while I was unwrapping everything. So, two photos.

See, I could not shake Little Man. He was very interested in this. He wanted to take this away from me....but I wasn't crazy about having Tardis blue nail polish all over the living room. So, I kept this one pretty well hidden.

And my handmade gift: a Tardis blue cowl...with buttons! I'm not sure how to wear a cowl without looking silly so I'm going to have to get some help in that department, preferably from someone that has some fashion sense (as I have little). Seriously, I took a self-portrait of me wearing this and I look a little silly...I just don't think I'm wearing it correctly. No, I'm not going to show you.

So....that was my swap package. I still can't show you what I sent out because, well, I didn't exactly photograph it...I did photograph my handmade project and I can get a photograph of the yarn but I didn't actually photograph the box. Silly me.

Anyway, Little Man approved of the package.

And now for something completely different...

On Saturday, I started work on my Snail Hat (pattern by Elizabeth Zimmermann). I picked a bulky green yarn I had in my stash (Sprout by Classic Elite Yarns) and started working on this project. It went quickly and by the time I quit working on it on Saturday, I was almost halfway finished. Dear Bob do I love bulky yarns...

There it is. My little "work station" on the bed. I had my book, my yarn, and my project bag. I was using some little sheep stitch markers that I received in a swap awhile back. I wasn't sure they'd fit on US #10 needles but they did.

Anyway, I finished said hat last night...

It does do a spiral toward the top. I'm not exactly sure I did the top correctly per the pattern but it works so I'm just going to go with it. I was hoping it would come out child-sized but it didn't. It fits me...oh well. I suppose if I go down to a worsted weight that it would become child-sized. I'll have to make another one.

Anyway, specifics...

Pattern: Snail by Elizabeth Zimmermann
Needles: US #10 Addi Turbo 16" circulars & US #10 ChaiGoo Bamboo DPNs
Yarn: Sprout by Classic Elite Yarns in Galapagos Green - these come in 109 yards/skein and I had quite a bit of leftover (I'm thinking I have around 1/3 skein left so around 30 yards)
Size: Well, it fits me...that wasn't the intention but that's how it turned out...
Modifications: I started out by CO and immediately joining in the round followed by 1x1 ribbing for 3 rows (the pattern has you work five rows in garter stitch before doing the increase and then joining); the top may not be done how the pattern specifies but the directions were a little wonky for the top so I'm not surprised that it may not match...whatever, it worked.

So, that's what's been going on around here...

I hope you're all having a lovely Monday. Perhaps there will be something new on Wednesday. Or not. And maybe I'll be able to show you something else on Friday...maybe. We'll see.

Missed it Monday: All About Comments

It's that time again...Missed It Monday.

But this isn't a knitting post...well, it's sort of a knitting-related post but in a very roundabout way. Anyway, some of you that may have visited my blog yesterday and left me a comment might have noticed that it took significantly longer than usual for those comments to actually post. If you've ever commented on my blog, you'll notice that it says something along the lines of "comment will post after blog owner approval." When I first started my blog (see that post right here), I had some initial problems with spam comments and the decision was made that I was willing to take the time to approve each and every comment to come through my box...not that it was difficult at first. No one really knew about the blog so there really wasn't anyone commenting.

But, I digress...

Sundays are normally spent in our jammies, watching movies, eating food, and being generally lazy (with Husband and I frequenting our laptops). I would have had ample time to visit my blog frequently and approve comments throughout the day. In the case of yesterday, we were going to see Husband's aunt & uncle and that branch of the family for grandma's going away party. But, sadly, that just isn't what happened...

After Little Man having far too much of his bottle formula/milk mixture on Saturday night (seriously, the kid took 11.5 oz. in a little over an hour, and then another 7 oz about 7 hours later), he decided to puke all over himself, his crib, his sheets, his blankets, and Tigger around 4:30am. It required a full bedding change and wardrobe change and cleaning him up...and removal of Tigger so he could be cleaned, as well. Poor kid. Some of the puke got in his eyes and it just wasn't good. I gave him another bottle and he only took 1.5 oz...which is very odd for him. But, he went back to sleep and we called it good. He's done it before where he'll just puke once and that's it.

Not so, this time.

We got up yesterday morning, had a bath, and went to eat breakfast. While Little Man was sitting in his high chair, he decided that it was time to puke again. I hadn't even fed him breakfast yet! It required a full wardrobe change and cleaning up the high chair. We started wondering if he wasn't getting sick......Husband called his aunt & uncle to let them know we weren't going to make it for grandma's going away party because Little Man was puking. After cleaning him up, I fed him breakfast (applesauce - something not too heavy)...and he proceeded to puke all that up within five minutes.

So, after a call to the metabolic doctor on call and throwing things into bags, I took Little Man up to the emergency room at University Hospital/Children's Hospital (they share an ER). We got up there around 11:45am (Husband drove up separately). He had all sorts of tests run (liver function, his acyl-carnatines, blood sugar, etc) and was hooked up to an IV. He was acting normal throughout all of this (which is a good sign). Once the IV was in, we got him to take a little nap (maybe an hour). When he was woken up by his IV being done, we gave him another popsicle (he'd already had two before he fell asleep)...and then we were cleared to go (even though one of his liver function tests came back a little abnormal) until they took his blood sugar again. After the IV and three popsicles, it should have been significantly higher than 85...but it was only 85. It was actually lower than when we brought him in (it was 88 when we first got there). Soooooo......he was hooked back up to the IV for another two hours and he had another popsicle. Once his next IV was done, his blood sugar was 107 (which is high) and we were cleared to go. We got home around 6:30pm last night. Little Man had spent most of the day laying in a hospital bed or sitting on my lap, being a little cuddle bug.

We were instructed to go back to our "normal" routine...which I disagreed with and questioned (and subsequently did not follow). I put him on his "sick" routine (which is more feedings throughout the night, "light" food that shouldn't upset his stomach - popsicles, saltine crackers, juice, etc., and at any sign of him getting sick again, we're back to the hospital). So far, no puking but he hasn't had anything other than his formula/milk mixture, popsicles, and saltine crackers...he seems to be feeling okay. He's not quite as energetic as he normally is but he's still running around like a wound top.

Anyway, back to the original reason behind this post: because I didn't get home until later than we normally would have, I didn't get a chance to accept comments. So, all comments are now posted (they were all read and accepted)...hooray :)

And a word about comments: I don't (generally) reply to comments because I haven't figured out how to do direct replies to comments that don't come out as separate comments themselves...I suppose I could e-mail each individual commenter but I don't always have a way to do that.

So, I do read each and every comment and I appreciate them very much (so, please don't stop)...I just don't always get to reply :)

Missed it Monday: Update #2

So, again, I missed something over the weekend....or, rather, it didn't exactly belong on my Self-Imposed Year of Projects update from yesterday.

I guess that makes today: Missed It Monday

What did I miss? A valid question. It's not exactly "missed" but, rather something I was going to mention that I completely forgot to mention. And that's okay. That's what Missed It Monday is for...

Some of you may remember my Things I'd Like to Accomplish: The 2012 Editions (and if you don't, you can go look - I'll wait). There were things on the General List: cleaning the house, organizing the paperwork, organizing my books, organizing my recipes & cookbooks, organizing baby stuff, and getting back to running/workouts. There were also things on the Crafting List: learning a new knitting technique, make at least one crocheted item, finish four pairs of socks, get my yarn stash, roving, and  needles on Ravelry, make a(nother) sweater or something, work on my spinning, and baby knitting.

For the General List, I've worked on a couple things like organizing paperwork and my recipes. But, what I really wanted to talk about was the Crafting List.

I've pulled out my wheel recently. After the icky feeling I got last week, I needed something that wasn't knitting but was fiber-related. So, out came my wheel. I purchased about three pounds of wool from a local lady (okay. so it takes me 25 minutes to get to her place but still, that's pretty local) and started spinning. I bought three different kinds (colors) of fiber: a light grey, a dark grey, and a tweedy white. I took out the light grey, weighed out about two ounces and started spinning. I have a bobbin that's almost full and it was only about an ounce. I don't know what that says about me...but for a single-ply, it's not too bad, especially when you consider that I haven't spun in awhile.

It was nice to spin.

The other thing I did was I learned a new knitting technique. It's nothing fancy, just a new cast on method. Normally, I do long-tail or knitted cast ons for projects. After frogging my Lothlorien Hat and re-starting...several times...I decided that I should learn a new cast on method. So, I turned to the old stand-by: You Tube. I looked up cabled cast on for knitting, watched the video, and realized that it wasn't as hard as people liked to tell me and that it wasn't going to work well for the hat. So, I didn't finish the cast on in the cabled cast on because it wouldn't have had enough stretch for a hat (it's good for things that don't require extra stretch). But...the point is that I learned how to do something new in the realm of knitting.

I can scratch something off my big list. Hoooooooray :)

Missed It Monday

I had a FO Friday post this past Friday but I hadn't gotten around to any photographs. Just that I had finished my Skyp Socks...and yay that I had finished them! Instead, I give you Missed It Monday...a day for those things you missed (forgot?).

So, now that it's Monday and all the events of the weekend have worn off (not that there were many, mind) and my Year of Projects update was done yesterday, I can show you pictures of the aforementioned socks and give you the specifics on them.

Pattern: Simple Skyp Socks by Adrienne Ku
Yarn: Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock (Mediumweight) in Chickabiddy
Needles: US #1 Blackthorn DPNs
Size: Men's Medium
Modifications: I think I added one extra repeat of the chart to the leg (which was only two rows), I picked up 18 stitches for the gussets (instead of the 16 in the pattern), and I changed the foot decreases to: following the every other row decrease until there were 44 stitches, then did every row decrease until I had 8 stitches left (instead of 16), then I did 4 k2tog (4 stitches left), cut the yarn and looped it through the remaining four stitches. That's why the toes look a little pointy. It's okay though.

The socks almost turned out like identical twins...I swear I didn't plan it that way! The yarn is so busy that it's difficult to tell that they're not identical anyway.

The recommended needle size for the yarn is US #1.5-2.5 which I found odd because it's classified as a sport weight yarn but it worked out pretty well. I went down to a US #1 because I didn't have US #1.5 needles when I started this project (I do now).

I wasn't sure about this yarn. I purchased it from IrishGirlieKnits when she was doing a destash because I wanted to try BMFA yarns and we don't have them around here. But it wasn't the yarn I was unsure of...it was the color. I tend to stick to greens, blues, purples, and neutral colors...and these socks are so not in those colors. But, I figure, why not? They're just socks...and I only wear handknit socks in the winter or with long pants/skirts because I'd look silly with them while wearing shorts. Just sayin'...so, I got some wild, so-not-my-colors yarn and went ahead...and I love these socks!

Now, we'll just have to see how the yarn holds up to washing...in the machine. I did handwash them in the sink with a bit of Eucalan and the water in the sink turned an interesting shade of pinky-orange. I'm hoping that it was a one-time thing. I was scared that the colors were going to bleed and all the yellow in the yarn was going to turn orange...and while some bleeding did occur, the yellows are still mostly yellow. Oh well. In the photos, I hadn't even washed or blocked or anything...they went straight onto my feet! Currently, they're on my sock blockers in the bathroom. They were almost dry yesterday so I'm hoping that they'll be dry soon enough and I can see how bad the bleeding really was.

So, overall, good pattern, good yarn, love the results...I may even make these socks again in a different color. Oh, and I had some yarn left over, too...not sure how much...probably should figure that out.

In other random knitting events, I frogged my Lothlorien Hat that I was test knitting. It was originally written to be knit flat and seamed and I talked to the designer about converting it to the round (I hate seaming)...she took a quick look at the pattern and figured out how to work that. And then I started...and things weren't working out. There were some math problems with the increases at the beginning (which I just fudged to make work properly), an extra stitch in each row that was making a fake seam at the beginning of each round, and the decreases weren't going to work out very well. So, I sat down last night and typed an e-mail to said designer about how to convert said pattern into the round. I looked at each facet of the pattern from the CO, to the increases, to the chart, to the decreases and I think I figured out how to convert it into the round without losing the integrity of the pattern itself. The only part I'm not positive about are the decreases at the crown...and that I'm just going to have to play by ear when I get that far. I'm not sure what she's going to say about it but we'll see.

This is why people have test knitters for projects...just sayin'...
